UK Start-up Visa Eligibility: Historical Route and Current Rules
Updated 22 October 2026. This article originally described eligibility for the UK Start-up visa. GOV.UK says that route is closed to new applications. The requirements below concern the current Innovator Founder route and are a general overview, not an assessment of an individual case.
Current Innovator Founder eligibility
GOV.UK says applicants need an approved endorsing body to assess their business or business idea. For a new business, the idea must be new, innovative, viable and scalable. Applicants must also meet the other route rules, including the English-language requirement, minimum age and applicable personal-savings evidence. Read the current eligibility page and the Immigration Rules before applying.
Business funding and personal savings are different
Do not treat an old claim that “no investment is needed” as a complete funding rule. GOV.UK says a person setting up a new business must demonstrate sufficient business funding to the endorsing body and where it comes from. Personal maintenance funds are a separate requirement, subject to the current rules and any applicable exceptions. A credible financial plan should reflect what the proposed business actually needs.
Existing Start-up visa holders
People who already hold a Start-up visa may have options under the current rules, including a possible switch to Innovator Founder. The route and individual circumstances matter. Consult the official Start-up visa page and an appropriately regulated immigration adviser for individual advice.
