Innovator Founder Funding: Is £50,000 Required?
Updated 22 October 2026. The former UK Start-up visa is closed to new applications. Earlier text on this page incorrectly described a universal £50,000 threshold, a fixed job-creation deadline and an open Start-up route. Do not use those claims to plan a current application.
Is there a fixed £50,000 investment requirement?
The current Innovator Founder eligibility guidance does not state a blanket £50,000 minimum. It says a founder setting up a new business must show the endorsing body enough funding for the proposed venture and explain its source. The amount will depend on the business plan. Some applicants with an already established and previously endorsed business are treated differently under the stated conditions.
Separate business funding from personal savings
Business funding covers the resources needed to build and operate the venture. Personal maintenance funds are a separate immigration requirement. GOV.UK currently describes a £1,270 balance held for 28 consecutive days for applicants to whom that rule applies, with different circumstances for some people extending or switching after time in the UK. Check the live official guidance before applying; business investment funds cannot simply be counted as personal maintenance money.
Prepare a credible budget
Estimate product development, staff, premises, marketing and working capital from defensible assumptions. Show funding sources, when funds will be available and how long the business can operate if revenue is delayed. We can help with financial planning, but no investment amount or service guarantees endorsement or visa approval.
