Innovator Founder Business Ideas: Innovation and Evidence

Updated 22 October 2026. The old UK Start-up visa is closed to new applications. The points table formerly shown on this page was not a reliable way to assess a current Innovator Founder business idea. Use the current GOV.UK route guidance and an approved endorsing body’s instructions instead.

What makes an idea innovative?

The Home Office guidance for endorsing bodies asks for a genuine, original business plan meeting a market need or creating a competitive advantage. An idea should explain its distinctive product or service, the evidence of demand and why competitors cannot easily copy its core innovation. A familiar business with only an incidental technology feature may not meet the innovation standard.

Can the founder deliver and grow it?

Viability is about a realistic plan, available resources and the founder’s skills and market awareness. Scalability requires a credible path to growth, including potential job creation and wider markets. The founder must be able to explain a material contribution and an active role in the business. An idea’s sector or a purchased “ready-made” plan does not by itself establish eligibility.

Develop the evidence before seeking endorsement

Interview potential customers, test important assumptions, compare alternatives and build a budget. Record what you learned and how the idea changed. UK Startup Visa can help with market research and business planning; contact us about the scope. An endorsing body and UKVI make the relevant decisions, so no idea can be advertised as guaranteed to qualify.
